Description

This rare Chinese Export card table presents a magnificent display of Oriental woodcarving, tailored for a sophisticated European interior. The most eye-catching feature is the four-leaf "envelope" top, where each triangular segment is meticulously relief-carved with intricate foliate and fruiting vine motifs that converge to form a seamless, decorative square when closed.

The table is ingeniously constructed with a swivel-top mechanism; when rotated, the four hinged leaves unfold to reveal a flat gaming surface, often featuring a traditional green baize or plain hardwood finish. The upper carcase is supported by four robust cabriole legs, each heavily carved with mythical beast masks at the knees and terminating in elegant ball-and-claw or scroll feet, united by a decorative pierced and carved X-frame stretcher for added stability.

The padouk wood, prized for its density and durability, exhibits a deep, dark-chocolate patina. The finish is remarkably tactile, allowing the fine detail of the hand-carved frieze and legs to catch the light, while the single concealed drawer is finished with a carved front that maintains the table's continuous decorative aesthetic.
